Managing teams between the auction and the first ball.
A team is a name, an owner, a purse and a squad that has to stay within limits. What to track, who should be able to change it, and why the squad list and the scorecard drift apart.
What does cricket team management involve?
Cricket team management means holding four things per team and keeping them consistent: the team name and branding, the owner who can act on its behalf, the purse with every auction spend deducted, and the squad list against minimum and maximum size limits. The limits have to be enforced at the moment of a bid, because a squad discovered to be illegal after the auction has no clean remedy.
Four things per team
- Identity. Team name, a short name for the standings column, and any branding.
- Owner. Who can act for the team, which is often not the captain. Why both get recorded.
- Purse. The starting figure and every auction spend deducted from it.
- Squad. The player list, against minimum and maximum size limits.
The squad has to be a link to player records rather than a copy of them. A squad that stores player names as its own data is a squad whose players lose their history the moment they change sides. The modelling rule and why it matters.
Purse tracking during an auction
Deducted at the gavel, not at the end of the round, and visible to the owner on their own device. Reconciling a purse in batches means an owner can bid money they have already spent, and the dispute surfaces several lots later when it cannot be unwound.
That reserve is the rule that stops a team buying two marquee players and then being unable to field eleven. It has to be enforced at the moment of the bid, because a squad discovered to be illegal after the auction closed has no clean remedy. Bid calculator and purse calculator.
Who can change what, and when
| Phase | Organizer | Owner | Captain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the auction | Full | Team name and branding | Nothing |
| During the auction | Full | Bidding only | Nothing |
| After the auction, before round 1 | Full | Request changes | Request changes |
| During the tournament | Full | Nothing | Nothing |
| Inside a transfer window | Full | Propose, needs both captains | Confirm |
Why the squad list drifts from the scorecard
It drifts because a late replacement gets agreed verbally at the ground and never recorded. Both parties remember the agreement, nobody wrote it down, and the scorecard now contains a name the squad list does not.
The fix is procedural rather than technical: require the replacement to be recorded before the toss, and treat an unlisted player appearing in a scorecard as a signal to check rather than as a typo to correct silently. The second half of that is the part organizers skip.
What teams should get after the auction
A squad roster listing every player with the price paid and the purse remaining, available immediately. Owners want it the moment the gavel falls, it settles any argument about what was spent, and it is what captains plan their eleven from.
Teams that received a roster PDF at the end of the auction do not ask you what they bought. Teams that did not will ask three times each over the following week. Closing an auction properly.
Team management FAQ
Who should be able to edit a team squad?
The organizer at all times, and the owner only before the auction and inside a transfer window. An owner who can edit a squad during a tournament can field a player who was never registered, which is the most common way a local tournament result gets overturned.
How should a purse be tracked during an auction?
Deducted at the gavel, not at the end of the round, and visible to the owner on their own device. A purse reconciled in batches means an owner can bid money they have already spent, and the dispute surfaces several lots later when it cannot be unwound.
Why does the squad list drift from the scorecard?
Because a late replacement gets agreed verbally at the ground and never entered. The fix is procedural rather than technical: require the replacement to be recorded before the toss, and treat an unlisted player in a scorecard as the signal to check rather than as a typo.
